Desalination

The growing pressure on South Africa’s water resources means that the effective desalination of brackish ground water, acid mine water, and seawater is increasingly vital in order to supplement potable water supplies.

Desalination is the process of removing salts and minerals from these types of water in order to produce an end-product that is suitable for human and animal consumption, irrigation or discharge back into the surface water system.

WSSA’s potable desalination plants are modular and the processes and technology employed depend largely on the feed water. Generally, processing will include some or all of the following:

* Extraction
* Pre-treatment (screening, cartridge filters, DAF)
* Ultra filtration – for suspended solids and high solute retention
* Reverse osmosis – for solutes and suspended solids removal
* Nanofiltration
* Brine handling
* Remineralisation
* Disinfection
