National CSR sponsorship

WSSA has been a sponsor of Valued Citizens Initiative since 2002. Valued Citizens aims to restore citizenship values in schools by helping children to acquire values that will enable them to build a fairer society through respecting others, knowing their individual liberties, fighting against criminality, understanding the rights and duties of citizens, hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention, cholera, entrepreneurship, leadership and the importance of protecting the environment. Endorsed by the Department of Education, the programme has reached over 1 000 public schools, 2 300 teachers and 340 000 learners in the Gauteng, Free State and Limpopo provinces.

Valued Citizens introduced the iNSPIRE programme in 2009 which concept is to involve 100 girl learners per province, in activities that promote our constitutional values and develop leadership skills. WSSA is sponsoring this programme in uMhlatuze Municipality where Valued Citizens, assisted by the KZN Department of Education selected 10 girl learners (grades 9 and 10) and 20 educators from 10 schools. Nearly 9 000 learners have potentially been impacted by this programme to date. Girl learners have given shape to a project which addresses gender issues, an effective tool to change our schools and develop a better understanding of leadership.
