The Challenge
When City of uMhlathuze took over the water and wastewater treatment bulk systems, the municipality was concerned about the availability of resources to manage increasing industrial and consumer demands on the systems.

The Solution
WSSA was awarded the tender for the management, operation and maintenance of all their bulk water and wastewater treatment works and the main bulk water distribution and storage systems.

Achievements

* No retrenchments or job losses, with local staff numbers increasing and ongoing training and development, including 25 ESETA learnerships
* ISO 9001:2000; ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditation across all aspects of the operations
* Consistently meeting all water and wastewater quality standards, thereby receiving DWA’s 'Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Recognition Award for the Most Improved Municipality' in South Africa
* 100% compliance with contractual KPAs and KPIs, as audited by the municipality’s independent contract regulators and auditors
* Improved service reliability and availability within the city’s peri-urban and rural communities, extending our customer charter and response time to the whole serviced area
* Ongoing improvements, upgrades and expansion of the treatment works
* Ongoing support, outside of the contract, to the municipality from our 24/7 workshop and mobile repair teams, particularly during emergencies or problems within their distribution system
